Project for Berghs Upgrade: Digital Design

As an effect of the Corona-virus many very interesting initiatives to show art and different types of culture have emerged. This includes live streaming of guided tours, streaming services provided by opera and theatre scenes and Netflixes with quality film. Hopefully this will generate revenue to the artists and open up new markets better than Spotify and hopefully this will make us use our screen time more mindful.
A year prior to the virus I attended an upgrade course for graphic designers "Digital design" at Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm Sweden. We were to investigate how to make a digital service for digital wellbeing with focus on nudging.
What we found out was that people needed down-time on their screens but weren't very happy with what they were doing with them and and that it didn't correlate with their interests. They did not plan in advance what to do with their smartphones and tablets and were unsatisfied afterwards.
So we decided to try out a streaming service that would collect all the amazing art and culture adapted or made for screens with a planning function to help user be more mindful with what they were doing. We saw that users who had strong interests that adapted well to screens such as gaming, movies, sports etc, and planned for what and when they would use their screens were more more satisfied. Unplanned scrolling and passive usage did not provide good rest or a feeling of a good use of free time.
An effect of this project has been that I myself have been more aware of what I use my smartphone for, I avoid newsflashes for longer reading, long documentaries and live music sets on youtube instead of scrolling social media and have thus been more satisfied with the down time with my phone which has given me both more value and better rest nowadays.
